CHAPTER SEVEN

FRANCESCA stared at the duty roster and felt her stomach plummet. Gabriel had swapped shifts this morning. The sinking feeling of dread continued as her overactive brain sent a million signals all at once.

He’d only swapped a few hours ago. It was obvious he was trying to avoid her. He must be regretting almost kissing her. She cringed. This was a nightmare.

She was beginning to think it hadn’t happened. Maybe it was all just a figment of her overactive imagination? So why did it feel like he was body-swerving her?

There was no way they could avoid each other on a cruise ship and with a medical crew as small as they had.

Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire. They’d gone from one whole heap of tension between them to another entirely.

She hadn’t slept a wink last night. No matter how hard she’d tried. Her brain just hadn’t let her. She’d eventually got up and tried to compose an email to Jill but nothing had sounded right.

In fact, everything had sounded exactly the way she felt—guilty.

The first email hadn’t mentioned Gabriel at all and had been a dead giveaway as complete avoidance.

The second had been too vague.

The third had been too over the top. Nothing had sounded normal. Nothing had sounded like she’d wanted it to. So she’d eventually given up, made herself a cup of coffee and watched the sun rise from the top deck.

She’d worry about the return email to Jill later.

She glanced over the clinic lists. The ship was due to dock in Ephesus, Turkey today and most of the passengers would probably disembark. Any passenger who needed medical attention would try and attend the medical centre early to avoid missing the coach trips ashore. Sure enough, the list for this morning was busy.

David appeared at her shoulder. ‘Morning, Francesca. You okay? You’re looking tired. Hope you’re not coming down with the same bug as Katherine.’

Francesca shook her head fiercely. ‘Just didn’t get much sleep last night.’

‘You as well?’ He raised his eyebrow at her as if she’d just revealed a closely guarded secret.

‘What do you mean?’

David shrugged his shoulders. ‘Gabriel asked me to swap with him this morning as he didn’t sleep last night, either. He said he’d be in around eleven to take over from me.’

‘Gabriel didn’t sleep, either?’ She could barely keep the squeak out of her voice. What did that mean? That he wasn’t really avoiding her? That last night had bothered him just as much as it had bothered her? For a second her spirits almost lifted.

David looked up from the chart he was marking. ‘Yeah, he was up late into the night, doing some work for his father.’

Her spirits plummeted immediately again. Gabriel hadn’t been thinking about her last night at all. She’d probably been the last thing on his mind. He’d been busy doing other things. ‘I didn’t know he worked for his father,’ she said lightly.

David leaned over and put a few ticks on the clinic list.
